My Stay At Home Dad Article: The Telegraph
Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to be featured in The Telegraph, where they shared my journey from a career as a mechanic to becoming a full-time stay-at-home dad.
I’m thrilled to have my story out there and want to take a moment to reflect on this experience and what it means to me.
When I tell people I’m a stay-at-home dad, I usually get a pause—and then a lot of questions. After all, I’ve spent most of my working life under the hood of cars. It’s not the usual path you’d expect, but life’s twists and turns have brought me here, and I’m genuinely excited about the opportunities being a father again has given me.
One of the most rewarding aspects has been watching my daughter’s milestones up close. As the article mentioned, I worked long hours when my older children were little, and I missed out on so much of their day-to-day growth. Now, I get to experience every new step—literally and figuratively—with my youngest. It’s these moments, the kind that often pass by in the blur of busy workdays, that I’ve come to cherish the most.
My partner, Emily, and I discussed this big change before taking the leap. We realized that with my previous demanding schedule, things would have become too hectic if we both went back to work. Instead, we found a balance that’s made our home life happier and more harmonious. As Emily put it in the article, “It would have made the whole environment unhappy.” I couldn’t agree more.
While it’s not without its challenges (there’s definitely no “escaping to work” when things get overwhelming), this new pace has also given me time to think about my future. For the first time since I started working in a garage at 15, I’m reflecting on what might come next. The chance to take stock, figure out what I want to do going forward, and—most importantly—spend this time with my daughter is an incredible gift.
